The procedure and costs involved for work permit applications differs depending on the situation.

To apply for a work permit for
someone currently outside the UK:

A work permit application will need to be submitted to Work Permits (UK).

Once the permit has been issued:

  • If the work permit is for longer than six months the holder will need to obtain an Entry Clearance Visa from the British Embassy in their home country before travelling to the UK.
  • If the work permit is for six months or less, the holder will just need to show the permit to the Immigration Officer on arrival in the UK.

To apply to extend a work permit for someone
currently in the UK on a work permit for you:

A work permit extension application will need to be submitted to Work Permits (UK). Once the extension has been approved the holder’s passport will need to be sent to a different department at the Home Office to extend their Leave to Remain. The Home Office are currently taking between 4 and 8 weeks to process Leave to Remain applications.

To apply for a work permit for someone currently
in the UK with a work permit for a different employer:

A new work permit application will need to be submitted to Work Permits (UK). Once the application has been approved the holder’s passport will need to be sent to a different department at the Home Office to extend their Leave to Remain. The Home Office are currently taking between 4 and 8 weeks to process Leave to Remain applications.
